Summer Picnic


The Summer Picnic provides members the opportunity to get to know each other better at a relaxing picnic with great food and activities.

(across the Potomac River between the Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorials)

The annual CSS Summer Picnic is famous in DC for its great food, fun activities and amazing raffle prizes.

The picnic includes a delicious menu of hamburgers and hot dogs, wine, beer, fruit and other snacks and drinks.

The picnic is a family friendly event that has activities for all ages. In past years, the Summer picnic highlights have included tasty BBQ, music, a raffle, art projects, games, an ice cream cart, “Taste of California” (a table with California fruits, nuts, wine, etc.) and a volleyball tournament with prizes.

This is a favorite event among members.  Mark your calendar now because this is a must attend event!

This event is open to all current CSS members at no additional cost. This event doesn’t require a ticket(s) to attend but please RSVP to the event. We are usually unable to collect money at this event, so please also make sure to join/renew your membership online ahead of time.

If you would like to bring a guest(s), please make sure to have them purchase a CSS membership(s) or Summer Picnic ticket(s) online beforehand.

Shuttle Information

The California State Society provides complimentary shuttle service from the Smithsonian Metro station to the picnic grounds.

Location

The shuttle picks up at the southwest corner of 12th Street and Independence Avenue; adjacent to Smithsonian metro escalator (this is the metro exit that is not physically on the mall). For ease of transportation, please feel free to print a copy of the shuttle route ahead of time.

The shuttle will have a California State Society sign on it.

Time

Shuttles run frequetly thoughout the duration of the picnic (10:30am – 4:30pm). The shuttle will start at 10:30am for volleyball participants and 11:00am for all other CSS members.

Join the CSS for the 15th Annual Volleyball Tournament at the Summer Picnic. The Tournament Begins Promptly at 11:30am(teams need to arrive at 11am)! The tournament includes prizes. The 1st and 2nd place teams win gift certificates.

The Registration fee is $50 per team and all team members must be CSS members by the volleyball registration deadline.

  • First Sixteen Teams to Register
  • 6 to 8 Person Co-ed Teams
  • Mandatory Title IX Rules
  • Round Robin Tournament

Tournament Registration

To register for the volleyball tourmant, email us at info@californiastatesociety.com with your intent to play and Captain’s contact information by June 1, 2012. The registration deadline is June 1, 2012 or until all slots are filled. All information must be emailed to us and all fees below must be paid online on or before (preferably) the registration deadline.

  • Team Name
  • Team Captain
  • Captain’s email
  • Captain’s cell phone (which must be with you on the day of the picnic)
  • Team registration fee is paid
  • All team members are current CSS members

Picnic Guidelines

Photo of two children showing their artwork at the California State Society picnicThe Summer Picnic is an all day event, so, you may want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable clothes, a camera, a big bag (to hold raffle prizes), a blanket or towel (if you want to camp out on the grass) and tennis shoes (if playing in the volleyball tournament).  We have handicap-accessible portable toilets available.
