The California State Society gives back to its community here in Washington, D.C. and in California. Throughout the years the CSS has participated in several different community outreach programs.
Although the California State Society is a 501 (c)(7) non-profit and can’t make large donations, the board members and CSS members work together to give back in a variety of ways. The CSS often chooses organizations to support with ties to California or Californians in need.
Several times throughout the year the CSS volunteers to cook food for the homeless in D.C. at DC Central Kitchen and collects professional clothing for people in need with Suited for Change (women’s clothing) and MenzFit (men’s clothing). Please visit the DC Central Kitchen and Suited for Change & MenzFit pages for more information about the organizations and ways to get involved with the CSS.
In 2006, the CSS also organized a group for the Help the Homeless Walk-a-thon and served Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless with Martha’s Table. The CSS held a signing party during the Holiday Party to send cards to service men abroad in 2010.
In addition to organizing opportunities for member to volunteer and/or donate, the CSS also donates the money earned from various events. For several years, the CSS raised money to help California students in need to support them during their internship in Washington, D.C. In 2006, the CSS donated the proceeds from the silent auction at Ahhhscar Night and the Summer Picnic raffle to Helping Our Heroes Foundation, a veterans’ organization. In 2009 and 2010 the Summer Picnic raffle money helped two California Students attend the Best Buddies International Leadership Conference. During the 2011 Cherry Blossom Celebration, the CSS held a raffle to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.
Throughout the years the CSS has held events to supported charity organizations. In 2005, the CSS co-hosted a wine auction with the Congressional Wine Caucus and raised over $110,000 for the Bush-Clinton Katrina Relief Fund. With the success of that event, the CSS co-hosted another one with the Wine Institute in 2010 to benefit the Clinton-Bush Haiti fund to help the earthquake victims.
In 2007, the Society partnered with local leaders and organizations to hold a gala, “Wine Women & Shoes”, benefitting the ONE Campaign and it’s effortsto fight global poverty.
Annually, The California State Society sponsors an annual Charity Golf and Tennis Tournament to raise money for Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). PWS is the most common known genetic cause of life-threatening obesity in children.
“The California State Society is a great way to stay in touch with friends and colleagues whether it’s a night of festivities celebrating the Oscars or a summer picnic on the Mall. But it’s much more than that. It’s also a great way to give back to our local community with volunteer services at places like the DC Central Kitchen in downtown Washington where we make meals for the homeless or help with business clothing drives for local charities, including MenzFit and Suited for Change. We are also able to direct proceeds from our events to Californians in need through Best Buddies and Homes for our Troops. It’s a fun way to celebrate old friendships and make new ones, without concern for politics or party, and at the same time contribute together to the communities where we live and work and to the Golden State where we are from!” ~Katie Wheeler Mathews
